It was a nice destresser for those having midterms that week.

We collaborated with SWE and OSTEM to celebrate SWE Week and Woman's History Month. We had a trivia night with random facts on historic women and things that have accomplished in their lifetimes. February 2022 Newsletter

Welcome back to yet another lovely newsletter!! Sit back, cozy on up for this February Newsletter!

NOCHE DE CIENCIAS

We had our Noche De Ciencias on February 12th. Various students and parents came out to enjoy the event. Students and parents came from the Phoenix area as well as here in the local area. Noche de Ciencias consists of inspiring kids about the diverse types of engineering there is and see what they can reach. The key is to spike their interest in pursuing something in STEM. While doing that we also hosted workshops for the parents and chaperones where we supplied information about how to get to community college or university and how to know what university the best fit for their student is as well as how to be able to afford the tuition of the university. We had various clubs that collaborated with us to be able to have a successful outcome. The clubs that helped us achieve this were Eagle Robotics, Chemistry Club, VEX Robotics, SWE, oSTEM, Eagle Aero, Redline Racing Division, EagleSAT and Eagle Works. The activities that we had for the kids were a planetarium show about diverse types of engineering, paper rollercoasters, CAD, coding, driving a robot, and using a racing simulation.

Bowling Night

On Saturday the 19th of Februrary, members of SHPE headed to plaza bowl and partook in a friendly game of blacklight bowling, a strangely competitve game of air hockey, and delicious baskets of fries.

Dave and Busters

Scavenger Hunt

The members of SHPE indulged in a little friendly competition in the form of a scavenger hunt around the downtown area of Prescott. Looking for locations from arcades and ice cream parlors to restaurants to theaters and post offices. Taking pictures just to prove they were there and discovering hidden gems along the way. The hunt consisted of three levels with sets of riddle-like picture/word clues hurtling you all across town. As we raced through town all with one goal in mind we encountered various good dogs, all manner of characters cosplaying as old timey figures, some who actually were just old timey figures and mischievous Samaritans trying to entice us to veer off course with the prospect of good barbeque.

Shout out to Ana, Alfonso, and Kevin for winning the Scavenger Hunt!!

Outreach Robot Event

We introduced middle school students to the topic of electronics, more specifically, electricity and circuits. We planned an activity to help students discover the power of electricity. The activity started with a presentation of a high-level overview of what electricity and batteries are and how they power systems. To visually demonstrate this, students each built a small robot that resembled a "HEX Bug". A small 3-volt battery is used to power a small motor that vibrates brussels on a toothbrush, which then propels itself forward, like a creeping bug. After students built their robots, they decorated them with LED eyes and various art supplies. The goal of this event was to not only teach students, but also to encourage curiosity. When students get a chance to create something awesome and take it home, they will want to keep learning more.
