Prohibited Items

At Embry-Riddle, we encourage every Eagle to be their best and most authentic self, including in the ways they decorate their room or any items they may own. However, there are limitations to items Eagles can have in the Residence Halls on campus due to environmental, fire, facilities, and safety concerns. Below you will find the list of prohibited items in the Residence Halls.

Please note: Housing & Residence Life professional staff and Campus Safety & Security reserve the right to confiscate any item(s) or substance(s), at ant point in time, that are in violation of Housing & Residence Life policies and the Student Code of Conduct for Residential Campuses. Housing and Residence Life reserves the right to amend the Student Code of Conduct for Residential Campuses at any time with notice to residents.

Safety or Environmental Concerns — including but not limited to:

3D printers that produce a respiratory hazard (use powdered material or produce dust), use or produce metal/metal materials, utilize ultraviolet lamps, or use isopropyl alcohol.

Only fully enclosed 3D printers are permitted in the residence halls.

Alcohol and other drug paraphernalia, including those intended to serve as decoration

Home theater systems, or noise amplifiers, including subwoofers

Air conditioners not provided by the university

Lasers outside of a classroom environment

Animals/Pets

Non-lethal fish Fish are the only pet allowed in the residence halls. Fish tanks cannot exceed ten gallons and must be cleaned regularly/maintained appropriately. Fish are not permitted to be left in the residence halls during break periods (see Animals/Pet Policy).

Weapons & Other Dangerous Materials

This includes ammunition and empty ammunition casings/shells (see University Weapons & Other Dangerous Materials Policy).

Fire Concerns — including but not limited to:

Any appliance or item with an exposed heating element

(Induction hot plates, electric pots, and air fryers are permitted in the residence halls)

Candles, incense and any item with an open flame

Candles used for religious practices are permitted by first obtaining permission from Housing & Residence Life. Wickless candles used with a wax warmer are approved.

Unapproved Electric Micromobility Devices

Electric Micromobility Devices are prohibited from being stored, operated, charged or brought into University residence halls.

Electric micromobility devices include any electric-powered recreational transportation devices, such as:

  • Motorized/Electric bicycles
  • Motorized/Electric scooters
  • Motorized/Electric skateboards
  • Hoverboards
  • Self-balancing boards
  • Any other recreational, wheeled electric-powered items or conveyances

Halogen/Ultraviolet/Lava/Sun lamps

Live-cut trees

(e.g. Christmas trees)

Non-ceramic personal space heaters

Unsafe Extension cords and/or anything hanging from the ceiling

Extension cords must be UL approved, three-pronged, and not contain any cuts, tears, or splices. Extension cords and power strips must be plugged directly into a wall outlet; they cannot be plugged into one another (“daisy chaining”)

Facilities Concerns — including but not limited to:

Darts and dart boards

(Induction hot plates, electric pots, and air fryers are permitted in the residence halls)

Self-adhesive light strips attached to University walls or property

(e.g., LED strips)

Motorcycles, mopeds, or similar vehicles and/or parts

These are prohibited inside the residence halls. These vehicles may be parked in the university Resident Permitted Parking Lots with a valid Parking Permit from Campus Safety & Security

Waterbeds, hot tubs, and any items that hold more than 10 gallons of water

Freezers

(standalone, not those included in approved mini-fridges)

Refrigerators over 4.0 Cu. Ft

Loft kits not provided by the university

Satellite dishes

Shopping carts

Wireless routers, switches and network hubs
